venting - lack of adult volunteers

Hill, Carol A (carol.a.hill@INTEL.COM)
Thu, 16 Jul 1998 14:12:03 -0700

Need to vent. I got a call last night from our brand new Committee Chair for
the pack (about 2 months old). She has decided that she does not want to
expend the energy, drive and ambition needed to rebuild a pack (we have 1st
year and 2nd year Webelos ONLY). I also found out last night that our
Webelos 1st year den leader has moved, without notification to anyone in
scouting. I feel like we've been crippled. When I took on being the
Cubmaster for the pack, we were in bad shape. We had a committee in name
only and dwindling enrollment. The second month of my tenure I had the DC
come to the meeting with adult recruitment help. We managed to get a basic
committee together. Now, I am down a Committee Chair and down a den leader.
I am stressed and starting to lose my enthusiasm.....I'm beginning to think
maybe I should take on CC and let someone else be the CM....I'm doing that
job anyway....

I called our Unit Commissioner and explained the situation. We are going to
lay low for the summer (we've been having trouble with participation anyway)
and try to start anew in the fall with recruitment. We are keeping our
fingers crossed that we will get enough boys to get the wolf/bear dens going
again AND that we will get adult volunteers. I guess I will do whatever job
is left....I'd rather do whatever job is left, just to make sure we have
what we need. If we can't get it pulled together at recruitment in the
fall, then I think I'm going to ask to merge with another pack. I would
rather do that, then see the boys lose out on the program. Getting the
volunteers in the first place wasn't the easiest thing in the world to
do.....and we have to do it all over again after only 2 months......I want
to scream....I want to shout.....I want to find a group of adults that want
to be involved with their kids.....I know they are out there
somewhere.....but where do I find them!?

Sorry for being a downer....I needed to get this off my mind (so to
speak)...thanks for letting me vent.

YIS,
Carol Hill
