GPS Accuracy

Can anyone tell me what the positional accuracy of hand-held GPS receivers
(the kind suitable for hiking) is (+/- 10 meters, 100 meters, etc) for
finding features on a standard topo?

Also, are they available for short term rental anywhere?

I started a Troop in March of '97 with 12 boys: 8 Webelos from my Pack, 3
from another Pack, and one new Scout. I formed them up into two patrols,
had them elect PL's, and rotated the PL's every 2 months. I borrowed a
senior Scout from another Troop and appointed him SPL. He had been Patrol
Leader and Senior Patrol Leader in his Troop, and had been Senior Patrol
Leader of the Council's Junior Leader Training Troop.

I reviewed this with the boys before I took this step, making sure that they
all understood that this was a temporary step, that all would get a chance
to be Patrol Leaders, and that they would elect their own Senior Patrol
Leader by the time the year was out. I didn't have this young man appear in
this position until they all agreed. We also went on a joint campout with
the SPL's other Troop (Troop 49, Lemont, Ill.) They all responded well to
this, mostly because of the excellence of the young man chosen. After 6
months, they then elected their own Senior Patrol Leader, who then had a
model to follow.

Note that this is a great help to a Troop that may have more older Scouts
than leadership positions to give them for their advancement. Check with
the Scoutmasters in your area.
