Go with what the family feels is appropriate, Brian. Some families
do not desire or want ANY cards or letters and would rather have
those that feel inclined to do so, to send a contribution in the
name of the deceased to a charity.
Other families welcome letters and cards from Scouters, and will
give permission for their home or work address (work is better) to
be released for the purpose of gathering such acts of kindness.
Still other families will rather have Scouting-related letters and
cards to be sent to the chartering partner organization (the name
of the COR should be given in care of the business or
organization), with the COR placing the material into a binder or
other suitable document protector and presenting it representing
all of Scouting during the funeral or the wake (depending on
faith).
Still others will defer to the local Council, and depending on the
Council, they will either accept and forward or refuse cards (I've
yet to know a local Council that has refused cards and letters of
condolennce!) addressed to the Scout's/Scouter's family in care of
the local Council.
But in ALL cases, the family of the deceased should be contacted
and asked, as it is their their say as to how they want that aspect
of their love-one's rememberance to take the form of and in what
degree.
We have posted here on Scouts-L in the past, information from the
families of deceased Scouts and Scouters, concerning the
circumstances of the passing of the Scout or Scouter, where the
funeral will be held and time, and any special information relayed
from the family of the deceased, such as where to make
contributions to or which organization/charities the person
supported in their life. Additionally (and I'm trying to remember
the name of the person, but the name escapes me and I'm using a
different software program which doesn't easily allow me to go back
and find the person's name or email address! *sour face*), there
was a website and email address set up specifically to honor fallen
Scouts and Scouters. I'll find it and post it later on this week.
