Re: Ranger Award!

Anthony G Robinson <agr10@JUNO.COM> asked:

>Does anyone who is involved in exploring know if the new "ranger
>award" will replace the "gold award". Or will they both stay
>"active".

The last word (June 1998) I've got on this is:

The GOLD (Growth Opportunities in Leadership Development) Award
will become *the* award for Explorers under the new transition.
There will be no changes in the requirements since many Explorers
presently meet those requirements.

The Ranger and Silver Awards will become the new awards for
Venturers. Outdoor Venturers will be able to earn BOTH Ranger and
Silver (should be Silver first, then Ranger); Church program
Venturers and other outdoor catagory Venturers will be able to earn
this award as well. The exact requirements have been CHANGED
AGAIN, and I'm sure that the final requirements are going to be as
challeging as they can be...

The Bronze, Gold and Silver Awards will be available to all other
Venturers.

Sea Scouts will be able to earn the Quartermaster as traditionally,
as well as the Silver Award.

The BSA's Insignia guys have been going back and forth on the
merits of the "ribbon bar" versus the square knot for the Ranger
and Silver Awards. The ribbon bars introduced during the National
meeting met with a lot of coldness (read that as negative
reaction). So did the Ranger Bar (the medal will come with a
separate bar that the Ranger can wear on the uniform in non-formal
occasions). NOW is the time, gang (for those interested) to WRITE
THE BSA's UNIFORM AND INSIGNIA COMMITTEE and ask for the older
Ranger and Silver Award knots to COME BACK to usage. It makes
sense if you're going to bring back a tradition, to BRING IT BACK
ALL OF THE WAY, right??

On the other hand, the BSA invested a lot in those ribbon bars
mainly for the Law Enforcement program, and hasn't gotten their
monies' worth out of them....so maybe it's not a bad idea to
recycle some of those ribbons...

>Also.. since sea explorers as of 8/1/98 will be known as sea
>scouts...will aviation explorers be known as air scouts again.

No. Aviation Explorers don't belong to the Venturing program,
therefore they are not considered "Scouts" but participants in the
Learning for Life - Exploring program. So, don't look for "Air
Scouts" any time soon...sorry....

Hope these answers help out!
