Our troop uses several advancement charts. One is a chronological
listing of the scouts. It shows date of birth, number of merit badges
passed each year by years, Number of required merit badges left for
Eagle, number of Unrequired left, Status of Eagle Project, Status of
Communications Requirement #6(Campfire, Court of Honor), present rank,
date of last rank.
Another chart shows only the required merit badges listed and a column
for total, unrequired total, grand total for each scout. The down
totals show which required merit badge needs an extra effort by the
troop to motivate some of the scouts.
Another chart we have all the merit badges listed across the top an outs
listed in a vertical column. This is maintained on a computer. With
65+ scouts in troop has been no problem maintaining and 'refreshing'
several times a year.
Another chart we have shows scouts by rank and their status on the
requirements of Leadership, Service Hours, Total Required, Total
Unrequired towards their next rank advancement.
Another chart is of only Life Scouts working towards Eagle. It shows
what each needs to do to make Eagle. It is something of a combination
or several of the other charts. It seems to work. 10 Eagles last
year. Five this year so far and we have at least a dozen others who
have their Eagle projects completed or will be before summer is over.
For the new scouts each Troop Guide and ASM for the new scout patrols
uses the Troop Master form Target First Class.
We also have a chart for the camping MB showing total camping nights,
total unacceptable nights, Total Acceptable Campingt Nights who don't
have Camping Merit Badge. We now have charts for the Hiking and Cycling
Merit Badge which shows what each scout has done towards these new
required merit badges for Eagle. With lots of hiking and cycling
already being done by the troop this will make it easier to achieve Star
and Life Rank in the future. With Personal Fitness being fully required
starting next February we may have a problem. Right now it ranks as the
least desireable of all 15 required MB badges for Eagle. Only 8 scouts
