Re: Medieval ideas for cubs

Dave Loomis (dloomis@NH.ULTRANET.COM)

Some years ago BSA program helps had a theme on medieval/knights of old
days.

Poster board, cut to shape, assembled, and painted silver looks good
for armor. Small cut-out bits of the same board can be applied for
decorative cuffs, elbow bits, or shoulder coverings.
A chain mail helmet can be made by shaping wet heavily starched dish
cloth, or knit caps turned inside out, over inflated baloons until they
dry and then painting them silver.
Lances can be made from broom handles, with a cone of poster board
attached just in front of the grip, as a hand guard - again paint silver
or to suit. The head and the hand guard should be silver, but the body
of the lance can properly be left natural.
Targets, the small round shields, used in sword fighting, can be made
from the tops of plastic 2 1/2 or 5 gallon food buckets, available from
any eatery. The center boss, or point can be carved or turned from
wood, and screwed to the center of the shield. Split end paper
fasteners can be pushed through holes drilled or burned in the plastic
with hot nails, to simulate rivits. Again paint silver then decorate.
Larger shields, for jousting can be made from the sides of 5 gallon
plastic buckets you scrounged in the last tip.
Gallon milk jugs or 2 1/2 gallon food containers make good helmets.
Cut away face area or drill or punch holes for the face area. Short
bits of combed out rope make great plumes for helmets.
Swords and daggers can be cut and carved from 1x3 pine material,
painted to look authentic. OR Make both from two layers of poster
board, glued together, with a bit of coat hanger wire, or small gague
welding rod stuck down the center for additional strength, yet not so
strong as to do injury.
Jousting can be simulated by standing cubs on a 2' circle of plywood,
with two arcs of plywood, attached across the bottom of the disk, tos
erve as rockers of the disks. Footing will be precarious enough that
they boys can't really get a good swing at each other without falling
off the rocking disk themselves.

All items simulating metal can be painted with spray aluminum paint for
better looks. Additional decorations can be done with paint-on oil
paints or lacquer.

Good luck, and enjoy.

Dave
