Kevin Woods asked what a 15-yr old Star Scout with an injured left arm
could do for afternoon activities at Scout Camp next month ...
If his arm is too sensitive for BSA Lifeguard, other high adventure
activities are probably ruled out, also. But there are a number of
DIFFERENT things at camp that might catch his imagination.
Have you considered asking him to assist the camp staff in instruction of
either a MB or in basic Scoutcraft? Our council's camp has a program for
new Scouts called "Camp Savvy" -- it is ALWAYS in need of additional help.
Your SPL may be looking for something more than teaching Scoutcraft to new
Scouts (which he's probably been doing for at least 2 years!); if that's
the case, helping with a merit badge class may be the ticket. Usually the
camps give some sort of recognition to those who have helped the camp staff
during the week (and if they don't, they SHOULD!)
Another possiblity is having him plan and lead a service project within the
camp, such as clearing and preparing a new campsite.
Finally, depending upon the extent of the injury and the policies of the
camp & director, he might be able to spend afternoons with the camp ranger
and learn a lot about what goes on behind the scenes to make a Scout camp
work, and do some of it, himself.
