Re: Chaplain, not ordained..

With respect to the Chaplain badge, the Insigina Guide states (for what that
is worth) with respect to the Chaplain badge (shoulder position patch):

"Note: Chaplain must be ordained or church-appointed clergy."

It also refers to this position as a Council Scouter?

I know that certain religions are very restrictive on the use of the word
"Chaplain", the Catholic church, for one, having issued a recent edict making
it clear that someone being called a Chaplain, in a Roman Catholic setting (as
for example the Chaplain of a Catholic nursing home) must be an ordained
clergyman, i.e. a priest- all this in a recent statement on the role of the
Laity. I assume that others, some of which even have lay ministers for
services, are less restrictive.

The answer would appear to be what the head of the religious organization that
sponsors your troop would allow. That is, ask him (her?) before you buy the
badge for that lay person.
