I too have a few hymns with those special memories. But I also know that
one of the more "standard" hymns was NEVER sung in our congregation
because the Elders simply forbade the minister to call it. Why? Well, I
never heard the details, but none of those men could hear that hymn without
guffawing until tears ran. NOT something they wanted to do in services,
obviously.

As contrast, some of the more irreligious and irreverent jokes I have
ever heard in my life came from clergy of various denominations. "'Twas the
Night Before Christmas, and Mary fell off the donkey" is the mildest of
'em, and the minister who told it to us got it from a Catholic Priest.
(Likewise the best dumb * joke I've heard was told, in authentic speech,
by one of those dumb *s I just wish I could remember it, but part of the
joke was his bumbling around ...)

I doubt most parodists intend to _offend_ -- amuse, startle, or tweak,
sure, but not offend.

IMO, YMMV.
