Here is what our troop does every year in September. We plan for the
entire next calender year. If the calender allows, we also include Stage
two Junior Leader training ( called by some Acorn). The process goes
like this:
1. The boys brainstorm Ideas for Outings without regard to calender or
similarity. The SM and ASMs act to keep things within policy and out of
the discussion phase.
2. They then try to reduce the list to about 15 and assign priorities.
The SM acts as moderator and to keep an idea voted out from being
discussed again.
3. The SM passes out a Calender with Certain Dates (Scoutorama,
Camporee, Scouting for Food) already filled in and Certain Dates (
Mother's day, Easter, School Holidays) blocked out. The boys then place
the events on the calender. If necessary, the adults point out
incongruities such as a tubing trip in Feb. or Snow Camping in August.
They also point out what dates have to been tentative such as visits to
Military facilities ( subject to the military's schedule}.
After this process, the schedule is brought to the next troop meeting, (
we have a large troop) and concurrance of the boys is obtained. The
schedule then is passed by the Troop committee to see if anyone has any
large pains with it.This step usually uncovers one or more Date
conflicts missed in the first goaround. If a change is required, the PLC
will make it and the schedule is presented once more for final approval
by the boys. It works. We are a quality unit every year.
