How a parent chooses to raise his or her child, except where obvious
abuse is present, is not the business of troop leadership. If the
parents choose to add requirements to "enhance the experience," they
may. I don't have to like it, but aside from trying to discourage it, I
can't do anything about it.
And I DON'T like it. Not a bit. Ideally in Scouting, a boy advances
because it is HIS goal, not his parent's. A goal achieved due to
external pressure and lacking internal desire is empty. "Auntie Beans"
wrote that her son agreed to this "enhancement of the experience." I
wonder how much resentment was behind the assent, and, owing to the
resentment, how much meaning will be lost when the goal is achieved.
