I must say that this is the first time I have submitted to the group. I
have followed the yammerin about GGG and have been amazed at the negativity
that I have seen. However, I have some news that should make us all stand a
little taller. WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!! I am from Eugene, OR. As you
all know, we had a very bad Memorial Day Weekend here. We were on a
Woodbadge Course at the coast setting up when we heard about the shootings
at the school. As the reports continued, we heard that the boys who
wrestled the shooter down were Scouts from one of our Council's Troops.
Four of the five boys were Scouts. They exemplify the ideals we all hope to
teach to the young people we deal with. No thinking about issues, no
thought for their own safety, they just acted. As if this was not enough,
one young man from this same school was with his family on Memorial Day
when his younger brother came up missing. The boy found him floating face
down in a duck pond. The boy and his father administered CPR and after 6
minutes or so the toddler began to breath on his own. Guess what? This
young man is a member af the Search and Rescue Post in Springfield, OR. So
all of us, no matter where we stand on such trivial (by comparison) issues
that consume so much of our free time, stand tall, for we are lighting the
light of Scouting and making a difference in the lives of young people. I
know that this may not really belong in this forum, but I had to do this
