LNT "whoops"!...and Hi-Adventure

Charlie Thorpe (charliethorpe@WORLDNET.ATT.NET)

Hello All -

I just moved up to some of the most gorgeous Scouting country you would
ever want to see!

I will be working with the Elkhorn High-Adventure Base (located on the Ben
Delatour Scout Ranch...3,000+ acres of 7-8,000 ft high absolute beauty!).
The Elkhorn High-Adventure Base is kinda near the itty-bitty town of Red
Feather Lakes (about 45 min NW of Ft. Collins...up high!).

Elkhorn runs three different programs during the mid-June thru July season:

week-long hi-country (guided) backpacking treks - in the fantastic high
Rockies west of BDSR;

week-long BDSR backpacking treks - mixing two major program areas (rock
climbing/COPE and Blackpowder/Buckskinning) with backpacking on the
isolated areas of the Ranch; and

a mix of the two - program on BDSR and (guided) hi-country trekking.

I couldn't resist the chance to come up here...not only is it a chance to
scope out the Continental Divide Trail and to do some good Scouting
....these folks are as fanatical about "Leave No Trace" as I am <g>!

Our objectives this summer will include:

Safe and fun genuine Scouting hi-adventure!

Plenty of LNT...and PLENTY of chances to try it out!

Hi-adventure training for units getting ready to go off and do their own!

Meaningful backcountry service project for each crew!

An extra guide was added when the regular season filled up, so there are a
few slots still open (scattered over the different weeks). Since there is
not a lot of time to do the physical conditioning needed for the
above-treeline treks, a crew signing up now might want to customize a
program/backpacking trek on BDSR. Call the Longs Peak Council
(800.800.4052) for info...tell 'em Charlie sent you <VBG>.

You can always email me for more info, but I only pull the mail when I am
in base camp...and I don't plan on being that way any more than I have to
be <g>.

NOW FOR THE LNT "whoops"!

I was packing last weekend to come up to Elkhorn and I messed up BIG TIME!
I managed to delete all the Scouts-L "LNT Survey" returns that I had
received up to that point...<f>

I ain't gonna tell anybody how I did it...unless you are in the SW
development biz and need a good example of how really "idiot-proof" SW
needs to be!

If you sent me your "LNT Survey" return before 2pm on Saturday (23 May), I
need you to resend it to me (pretty please, bended knee, etc.). I knew I
had done bad when I did it...I still have all the ones sent after that time
<g>.

I will be happy to post another copy of the blank "LNT survey" if you need
it (the entire LNT series, too!). There are a lot of folks on Scouts-L who
haven't sent the "LNT survey" back in yet...dust them off and fill them
out...I promise to try even harder to NOT loose them this time!

I will be leaving Elkhorn and going right over to NOAC (Ames, Iowa). We
will be presenting LNT in the T.O.A.P. area (as we did in '94 and
'96)...and this time we will be doing a slambang three-hour indoor session
as well! VERY sexy patch <VBG>...see you there!

Trace No Leaves,

- Charlie
