The point about this is that it is totally arbitrary which end of a
magnet we call North - there is no way of telling which end of a magnet is
north and which is south, without using another magnet (or a
electromagnetic field). Hence the "North" Pole of a compass or
any magnet can be defined as the end which points north, or more
accurately the end which points to the Earth's magnetic "North Pole",
which is the magnetic pole closest to the true North Pole.
