I have read the thread about 12-13 year old Eagle scouts and must reply. Iam
a thirteen year old eagle from 1962. In those days you could not join Boy
Scouts till 11. The requirements were much different in that swimming,
lifesaving, and pioneering, cooking and nature merit badges were required. I
went on to work my way through college and law school and set up muy own
practice. I was probably ADD there was a 10 point difference on my ACT in
verbal and math skills. So I must quote from the Bible "judge not lest ye by
judged"
My son made Eagle at twelve by one day. He is presently a junior in High
school. He carried the Olympic Torch as a Community Hero. An Assistant
Scoutmaster nominated my son for being a role model and a help to the Asst.
Scoutmaster's son who is deaf.
Whether we agree with the rules our obligation is to not impede a youth's
ambition to do anything that is good. If we set up various roadblocks because
of our bias, we are abusing the "power" given us as leaders.. Abuse of power
is the youth greatest complaint about the elders. So when the youth have
power they will also use it to promote their biases.
