Steve makes some good points. However I would offer one new option and
one concern. The New Option is what we do, we offer outings tailored for
the new scouts to succeed. Example. the new scout Backpack. Length about
a mile round trip. Staff, your top senior scouts. Planning, tell them
the equipment ain't gonna fit yet. Antidote, have the older ( read
bigger)tell about their first experiences backpacking. Great humor and
greater camaraderie. The concern is taking them on a long term. Most of
the longterms my troop has done, there is no base camp. We boogie to the
trailhead and then everybody takes off the next morning up the trail. At
the trailhead are our cars and the cars of the other backpackers. The
trailhead campground is for first nighters only and an new group will be
there each night. This may be a regional concern but Out in California,
Wilderness is popular and permits are required. Also, now you have to
account for every night to the public land agency and they don't provide
for splitting a group or getting a permet for a trailhead only. A
comment on Bridging. We find that most of the Webelos don't want to
bridge before Camporee so that they can still compete in the Webelos
division.
