In 1989 as part of the Troop Operations Plan, BSA introduced the
Venture/Varsity option for troops as an initiative to keep older boys active
and advancing. Because of the confusion with the Varsity Team program (which
is a separate unit, chartered to an organization) that has been adopted by the
Church of Latter Day Saints, the Varsity option for the troop was dropped in
1995. The Venture option as it stands now (we still don't know what the
fallout will be with the new Venturing program for the current high adventure
explorer posts that will take place beginning August 1) still exists, allowing
a troop to run a program geared to the needs of its older scouts (there are
different than the younger ones-that is for sure!). Because it is optional,
some troops, districts and councils have elected to use it, while others
continue with the standard program. We in the George Washington District,
National Capital Area Council, have had a formal Venture program conducted at
the district level for nine years. As a result, our older boy retention is
one of the highest in the nation. What follows in the next several messages
is a fact sheet prepared that outlines how we implemented the program here.
Remember, there is more than one way to skin the cat, and this is only one way
to get the job done.
