I replied to Mark privatly on this, but, now that someone has posted
in favor of it, I am posting this to the list as well.
While the idea of requiring Environmental Science & Wilderness Survival
as prerequisites for the camping MB sounds good on the surface, I have
to think that this would not be a good idea.
Camping is a reletively simple MB to earn. I believe it is intended
to be such. ES and WS are more advanced concepts - particularly WS.
To fully "cope" with the WS reqs, a boy _must_ be comfortable in his
own camping skills. An analogy would be requiring a boys to learn
diving as a prerequisite for swimming.
As far as the ES MB, there you have, what to some of us (still) is a
radical philosophy. Don't get me wrong, here. One of the first things
that I learned as a young Scout (Yeah, I know, and my SMs name was Noah)
was "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints." But it
seems that the current environmentalist philosophy is to not even leave
the footprints. (And, BTW, I _did_ take Soil and Water Conservation.)
NO, ES and WS address two entirely different sections of the program.
I vote no on this proposal.
Also, as someone elas said, we should be helping kids learn, not
putting obstacles in their way.
