Federal Tax Numbers

I have always understood that BSA units used the tax ID numbers of their
Charter organization for banking purposes.

That a unit is not an entity in to itself but that it belonged to the
Charter Organization.

Our Bank is now saying we should have our own, seperate from the Volunteer
Firemans association.

What are your experiences with this issue?
