I use 1 qt Ziploc FREEZER bags. I put in the bag 2 eggs, a dollop of
magarine, ground sausage (like Jimmy Dean - comes in plastic tube wrap),
cheese, diced peppers, chopped tomatoes, diced onions, mushrooms, and whatever
else you might have or want in it. Then I mush it all up. This breaks up the
sausage and ensures that it will cook along with the eggs. The sausage, green
pepper, and onions eliminates even the need to add salt and pepper.
Place the bag in boiling water and wait for it to cook - cheese melts and
eggs turn solid. One can eat the thing right out of the bag and throw away
(pack out) the empty bag. Lick your spoon and dunk it in the boiling water
and your cleanup is complete! This works great if the boys remember to buy
the bags.
On our last outing my New Scouts forgot the bags and we switched to the
alternate egg plan. HARD BOILED. They make great handwarmers on a cold
morning. Oh, by the way, the boiling water also works well to reconstitute
fruit flavored oatmeal and cheese grits.
You could probably warm other stuff in the pot of boiling water like raisin
bagles or English muffins.
Another great central core warmer is HOT TANG or lemonade. The real men ("no
such thing as too strong coffee") in our troop probably think hot citrus
drinks are wimpy, but it works for me. So we have made hot drinks, grits (a
two syllable word in Texas), and hearty boil-in-bag omelets and all without
making any mess. This could be done over a fire or on the stove.
What do you think, folks, does that sound good, or what?
