Introduction -- Glad to be here!

Thomas H. Harbold (tharbold@ns1.WMDC.EDU)

Greetings, folks!

I've been following the list with great interest for nearly two weeks, and
decided it's more than time I introduce myself.

My name is Tom Harbold, and I have the honor to be the newest Assistant
Scoutmaster of Troop 321 (Westminster), Baltimore Area Council. It's in
that Council that I spent my time as a Scout, also: first with Troop 371
(Atholton), then Troop 737 (Clarksville), and finally with Explorer Post
702 (Highland) -- a "High Adventure" Post, back in the days when Explorers
were basically what "Venture Scouts" seem to be today. I achieved the rank
of First Class Scout, but didn't go on in rank thereafter (to my regret, in
retrospect), though I did remain in Scouts and later, as I say, Explorers.

I'm quite a greenhorn as a Scouter: I volunteered "officially" on Scout
Sunday (though I'd been sending out quiet feelers for a month before that),
as I thought, as a Troop Committee member. Well, I showed up at my first
Troop meeting to be greeted by the Scoutmaster with a cordial "Hi! I
understand you're my newest Assistant Scoutmaster." To which I, somewhat
stutteringly, responded, "If that's how you can best use me!" Apparently it
was. *grin* I'm now half-way through Scoutmastership Fundamentals, and
having a ball getting back into Scouting. Shoulda done this years ago! :-)

No doubt I'll be a rather active participant in the discussions on-list, of
which several are most interesting. The one that's sparked my interest most
initially is the several threads relating to uniforming. As something of a
"uniform junkie," I hold very definite opinions on that issue, and will be
sharing them in probably two posts on the subject, divided into
"Philosophical" and "Practical" considerations. You may or may not agree
with some (or all) of my ideas, but at least you'll be left in no doubt as
to where I stand! ;-) Again, glad to be on-list, and I'm looking forward
to both learning from and contributing to the discussions here.

Yours in Scouting,

Tom
