alternatives to Philmont

Rod,
Our troop has an active high adventure program that develops its own
programs when we can't get into Philmont. In '92 we went to the Black
Hills and did a 50 miler on the Centennial Trail. In 94 we went to the
Nantahala section of the Appalachian trail in North Carolina (really
tough). In 95, we went to Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior. The
kids thought that was the best ever. Though the altitudes were not much,
the moose were great. In 97, I took one crew to Yosemite. In other years
we have gone to Boundary Waters, normally using Sommers but have used
private outfitter too.
I have files on all of those that I am happy to share. They are Mac based
Word, Excel and Filemaker. If you are on Windows and have those
applications, you can covert. Or, use them as guidelines to develop your
own trip. As time goes by, some of the contacts are dated but the concepts
are still good.
Based as you are in Ohio, I can think of several hikes near you - Black
Forest in Pennsylvania, the AT in Virginia, there is a Wilderness area in
the Shenandoah VAlley area too, the wilderness areas on the Kentucky
Tennessee border, the Shawnee river to river trail in southern Illinois,
proably lots more.
Good luck with finding an idea that would work for you.
