My first real military outfit had a real savvy first sergeant. For
small infractions which would normally result in a trip to see the
commander, administrative punishment ammounting to two weeks extra duty,
and a blot on our service record while we were with that unit, he'd tell
us of the alternatives and then say, "You know, I really hate to bother
the old man over something like this, and I like to keep a clean company
punishment book. I need someone to volunteer to help paint the barracks
for the next two weeks. Do you know anyone that would be interested?"
Result two weeks extra duty, no record, and very few repeats. Smart
man, that first sergeant.
