8001 plus ?

Jay Thal (jay.thal@TCS.WAP.ORG)

Well, moments after I posted the message 8000 calls my finger again struck the
redail button, and without even a ring I heard a tired but understanding voice
announce I had reached Sea Base.

It was a pleasent conversation, and I was informed that most of the slots
appeared to be booked up for the Summer of 1999. However, our Troop would be
placed on a waiting list pending a reassessment of the (manual) scheduling
process - a reservation list being passed around between the six staffers; and
whether or not the deposits arrive to backup the reservations.

What I am left with may be the precursor of Repetative Stress Disorder to my
right index finger, and a realization that the process didn't end in elation,
but with boredom as I mindlessly (though purposefully) continued to tap that
redial button. Fortunately, what little of my consciousness was left allowed
me to answer that voice at the other end and not automatically hit the
redial yet again.

For those who have participated in the thread on fairness of the Philmont
reservation process, let me say that this process seemed as fair (if
frustrating) as it could be - we were faced with the randomness and vagaries of
making making a telephonic hit at the precise milisecond a line became free.

Last night, at CPR training in preparation for Philmont, another leader said
that they had 13 people phoning and they had the fortune of getting a
telephonic hit at 9:30 am. Life is a matter of timing.

Smile. The Philmont 2000 scramble is next week.
