Been down this road before......

For the past 2 years I've been a Webelos Den Leader for a great group of kids.
As expected most of them wanted "meaningful" awards (ie not given when unearned)
but I did have problems with 3 who seemed to think that Mom and Dad signing the
book for activities was OK despite my frequent explanations to the parents and
the scouts. The problem was that I felt these boys could learn a lot by being
scouts and if they were disappointed enough they would quit. What resulted was a
compromise. They could do projects at home BUT they were then required to do a
presentation to the other den members. It has worked out well as they will be
finishing their Arrow of Light requirements this Thursday at our final den
meeting before bridging and are genuinely interested in going on to Boy Scouts.
The bottom line as I see it is that there has to be some flexibility in the
program, particularly if the rules wern't clearly explained, or you run the risk
of losing the boys and then the purpose of the program won't have been
fulfilled. Just my nickels worth.
