3rd annual whitewater canoe training - May 30, in TN.

Jack Wright (jwright@CHATTANOOGA.NET)

Announcing our 3rd annual whitewater safety training course for
Scoutmasters and ASMs. On the Class II Hiwassee River, east of
Chattanooga, TN, on the weekend of May 30 & 31, 1998.

If you're interested & close enough to drive, below are a couple of
facts. Those who want further info, please email a short request to my
address below, & I'll forward a longer explanation with details.

If you have no interest, please pass this message on to another person
in your Troop/District/Council who may be interested in the safety
aspects of paddling whitewater. It can be fatally dangerous unless you
know what you=92re doing. We=92ve had 4 kayak fatalities and 1 rafting
fatality (non-scouts) in the past 2 years in this area of prime
whitewater, and we want to do something toward the goal of no scouts or
scouters injured in this sport we=92ve loved for 30 years.

- Types of training available:
(a)Basic Open Canoe tandem (geared for SMs & ASMs, this course is
required in our Council to check out our canoes), and
(b)Intermediate Open Canoe tandem with Rescue techniques (taught by NOC
pro instructors)
- Cost for (a) above is $50/person, incl. camping, meals, books, matls.
- Cost for (b) above is $120/person, all inclusive, w/NOC instructors.

Moving water (Class I, calm) is taken for granted as a scout tradition.
A lot of Troops everywhere go on Class I, II, and even III whitewater,
without learning the standard safety techniques. Don't be ill prepared,
if you do moving water, consider coming to our course if you're close
enough.
