Maps and Orienteering in National Geographic, Feb '98

CHUCK BRAMLET (chuckb@AZTEC.ASU.EDU)
Wed, 21 Jan 1998 23:57:47 -0700

Just got the Feb '98 issue of National Geographic today, and there
is a _long_ article titled "Revolution in Mapping" in there. It
starts on page 6 and continues to page 39.
Rather interesting, actually, if you have one handy. The article
covers mapomaking from the earliest to modern times and the GPS.
it also contains some warnings ont he dangers of technology.
(Not "the sky is falling" type). The Scouts could probably read
the article at their school library. Encourage them, I think.

Also in this issue are an article on Jacgues Cousteau and one
titled "Why Explore". And one on Antarctica. And while you are
reading that one, you can think about the fact that one of the
first men to explore Antarctica was an Eagle Scout.
