Explorers Exploring Ethical Controversies

David F. Delman (Delman01@COMPUSERVE.COM)

Fellow Scouters, Particularly Explorers, and a few others

I recently picked up a set of work sheets in a packet
titled Exploring Ethical Controversies BSA No: 23-823.

Paraphrasing only a smidgen from the introduction:

Ethical controversies are dilemmas for which apparently
legitimate arguments exist for opposing positions. =

The exercises provide opportunities for critical thinking,
respectful disagreement, cooperative effort, and =

understanding others' beliefs.

I am using this with some people to demonstrate conflict =

situations and a few of the resolution techniques that =

are used particularly the value of "argument". Beyond =

what is provided in the packet I added a few "Do's" and
"Don't" from other sources since I am dealing with stronger
dilemmas and situations that easily degrade into name =

calling, moving to tangent issues, or movement to older =

long standing dilemmas that tends to avoid the conflict
at hand or avoid agreeing with anothers position.

My thought would be this packet would be a good tool for
mixed Explorer Posts with the possibility of adding other
dilemmas and counter arguments currently appropriate to =

young males, females, and their adult leaders. =

So often we mis-understand each other due to not being able
to understand the others style, point of view, or how a =

negotiation process even with 0& resolution is supposed to
work. School, our peer and parents attitudes, as well as
the popular 10 second media usually teaches us only one =

way rather than giving us the opportunity to learn and =

disagree on dual positions or negotiate into an alternative
improved position. Thinking for life far beyond 18 is never
too late to learn and I would encourage in todays "I got to
have it by the next commercial" "Who's to Blame for this" =

US society males and females get started early in preparation
for their life and country's future challenges.

Surprisingly some current topics like E-Mail Etiquette =

(privacy issues), and Competitive Sports Building/Not Building
Character are a few of the written opposing dilemmas.

Use it if it has value, and They and You will come and have =

fun with the verbal and intellectual competition. =

YiS, IMHO, and may we each attempt to live the SO,SL,SS,SM
