Re: East Carolina Council Mystery CSP

Dave Hultberg (dave.hultberg@PAONLINE.COM)

I want to thank everyone who responded to my request concerning my East
Carolina CSP. Other than the description, all I knew when I started was
that I received it in trade between July 1965 and June 1969.

>From the information I received, there were 5 twill, cut edge CSPs issued by
East Carolina Council for Jamborees and other out of council events. An Aid
to Collecting Selected CSPs by Franck et al classifies them as TA-1, TA-2,
T-3a, T-3b and T-3c. The TA-1 has a gold border and was issued for the 1953
Jamboree. The TA-2 also has a gold border, but is oversize (61x100mm). It
was issued for the 1955 World Jamboree. The three T-3 isses can be
differentiated by the cuff in the trousers and their size. The one I have
is either a T-3a or T-3b. As soon as I find where I left my metric ruler,
I'll know which one I have.

The book doesn't say what the T-3's were issued for. Of these last three
Bruce Baker said in a message to me, "They were all almost identical, and
are differentiated by the cuff on the pant leg. These three have the
wording "East Carolina Council" in the R&W portion of the patch. The "wide
cuff" was, I beleive, issued for the 1964 jambo, the "narrow cuff" the 1967
World Jambo, and the "no cuff" after that. I was a scout from 1966-1973 and
these patches were issued by the council to wear on out of council trips,
Philmont, Jambo's, Schiff, etc. The last three, the "T" series, were issued
without regard to cuffs, etc. They were all just different orders for the
same design which exhibited the normal manufacturing differences which vary
from run to run."

YiS,

Dave
