Our district advancement chairman does an excellent job of maintaining a
merit badge counselor list.
We encourage as many parents and adults in our unit to be on this list,
as do most troops in our district. This gives the Scout several
counselors in each area to choose from.
We should make opportunities for the boys whenever possible. The more
counselors, the better. Each troop should contribute.
A boy contacting an adult, whether from his troop, another troop, or the
community at large, is a growing experience.
We do a merit badge seminar with 500 other Scouts in another council. We
sponsor some merit badge classes through our troop, while some are earned
in merit badge classes at summer camp. Still others are earned from
approved couselors in the community the Scout seeks out on his own.
The combination of experiences I beleive are all positive ones for the
boy. I wouldn't use only one method exclusively or condemn one exclusively.
