I have seen young scouts attempting to cut down small trees unnecessarily,
but in general it doesn't happen often and usually not at all with older
scouts. And the older scouts are the ones that would be on the type of
wilderness trips described.

On my trip to the BWCA wilderness last summer, I (and my ex-scout sons) did
not see "chopped up trees" at all. However, I did see (and pick up) trash,
rope, and fishing gear left behind at several campsites. None of this
appeared to be scout specific and I would guess it was not, based on the
numbers of relatively inexperienced groups I encountered. I only met 2
scout groups but met 4 other youth groups and several more adult or family
groups. YiS
