There is a feeling in our Council, particularly on the Boy Scout side, that a
commissioner needs to be more of an expert than any of the leaders which he
serves. Since we have many experienced leaders including a couple of 25 year
Scoutmasters, this makes finding commissioners difficult, particularly if we
have to come up with 150 of them!

Neil, to bad The Council feels that UC's need to be experts. I am a UC and I
am no expert on anything. I find here in our Council a lot of the SM think
the UC is a Council spy. Again, to bad. I have a Pack and a troop I UC for.
My Scout Master called me one day not long after my son had joined the
Troop and asked me If I knew what a Outdoor commissioner or a unit
commissioner was. I told her our Council has no outdoor comm. and I am a
unit commissioner. It seemed there was a conservation patch that needed the
UC's signature on it. So, I helped her out with it. I am there to answer
her questions and if I don't know, I tell her I don't know, but I will find
out the information. I of course am called on to judge the pinewood derby
cars and taste the chili at the cook off. I introduce new ideas, like how
about keeping leadership records for the CM or SM award. The Uc job is a fun
job and some times being the one for your childs unit works and sometimes it
doesn't. I think your best commissioners come from the parent who really
wants to be involved, but due to work or family can't commit to the once a
week leadership roles. My Eagle scout will turn 18 in a year. He asked me
the other day if i would leave the Troop when he was gone? He said he hoped
I stayed because my job was a needed one.
