As a long-time blacksmith, I heartily endorse Rob's method of preparing,
painting, and preserving the cast iron skillets you wish to use as an
award. Although we are talking about cast iron and not the mild steel I
usually use when I make a finished product at my forge, the way one
preserves ferrous materials is the same. Follow Rob's technique to the
letter and you'll be very happy with the results.
