My personal opinion is that the size, brand, and type of pack really
don't matter nearly as much as how the pack fits the kid. It needs to
have adjustable straps and a padded hipbelt. When the pack has weight in
it, the weight should set right on top of your hips.
Then there is the never-ending battle between external and internal
frame. I myself prefer internal frame, but opinions differ. I really
don't think one is better than the other, but each has their own
advantages and disadvantages.
I said before that the brand really doesn't matter, and as long as you
can count on it being durable, then you don't. Some of my favorites are
Gregory, Lowe, and North Face. There are several other good ones out
