Snow shoes ala boys life

In the current "Boy's Life" there is mention of $15 snow show kits at
Philmont!
They appear to be made of 3/4 inch EMT , as opposed to the standard 1/2
inch EMT that one runs into in the do-it yourself section!
My question is what is the decking material made of to keep the cost down?
