Bill McCole asked about some astronomy programs for the PC.
I have one on my home PC called SkyGlobe. It's a shareware
program, and seems pretty decent. There are a few others
out there - just search Yahoo or one of the other search sites
for astronomy programs, and you might find something.
However, you might also try the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, at:
http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/
There are links there to all sorts of stuff related to astronomy.
There is also a program available there that will allow you to
track the space shuttle orbits, and possibly the satellites as
well, using the "Two line orbital element set"s that are published
in the sci.space.news hierarchy on usenet.
They also have a large archive of images from the shuttle missions.
In researching the above, I found that skyGlobe is also available
there. This site is also accessible thru FTP, at
jplinfo.jpl.nasa.gov
if you wish to go that way.
You might also try "Students for the Exploration and Development of
Space" at:
http://seds.lpl.arizona.edu/seds/seds.html
for more info on astronomy and space pictures. I just tried both
these links, and they are still good.
Hope this helps.
BTW, I finally got out to see the stars on Monday, Dec 8. Had my
binocs, and was able to see _all_ of the ones listed. Mercury close
to the horizon, Mars, Venus, Neptune and Uranus I needed the binocs
for, Jupiter, then Saturn over east of the Moon. These _still_ are
visible - I guess the 8th was the midpoint. I could still see most
of them last night. The arc started from the SW up to the SE, but
it is moving further west nightly.
Hey, I'm only 4 days behind, now! :)
