Who's on the Board?

Berk Moss (mossfam@TELEPORT.COM)

Bruce Coburn gave good information about the rules that the Committee and
not the SM or ASM conduct a board of reivew. (Uniform or not!)

Let me share an unplesant story. Manyo yo notice that I somtimes list
myself as from Troop 204 and sometimes from Troop 427. It seems that the
old Troop 204 was an excellent troop. 70+ boys 24 adult leaders, active,
outdoors, boy-led and an asset to the District and Council. The BoR's were
conducted by mostly ASMs. The committee got further and further away from
the field leaders. Then there was a very painful split over the program we
were offering to younger scouts and our extreme high adventure program.
Things were said. "Eagle Mill" - "Fifth Year Webelo program" Responses were
made.-"Whimp patrol" The Committee and the COR and Chartered Organization
asked for the resignation of the Scoutmaster. The Scoutmaster formed
another troop. Here I am. My sons moved to Troop 427. My men friends
stayed with Troop 204. I decided to register in both but never wear the
troop numbers of either. (I wear my District Committee patch and silver
tabs.) I serve both. I am welcome in both troops. A fwe of my friends also
serve the bridge path and my younger son has now signed up as an ASM in
T204.

How could this have been prevented? Well, many ways. Since I'm now on the
District Advancement Committee, I clearly see that the Board of Review is
an important check bythe committee on the troop. The Board of Review is not
only reviewing the Scout but also reviewing the program offered. Don't miss
this opportuity. Learn from us. Involve your Committee. If "there aren't
enough around" that is a warning sign that is much more significant than
something about Scout Advancement.
