Joe,
We encourage scouts who have "aged-up" to register as SA's. We also have a
SA, in the 40 year-old range, who, due to living about 1 1/2 hours away,
only attends outdoor activities. However, are campouts just wouldn't be the
same without him.
Remember that 18 year old's are being pulled in many different directions.
The simple fact that they are willing to keep in contact with the troop and
help out when they can, should be cherished - not discouraged.
Keep them registered, prod them to attend training, and use them on every
campout you can. Maybe someday they will become more active at troop
meetings.
Also, there is no requirement regarding having a Son in the troop. Anyone
who meets the minimum qualifications can become a registered Scout leader.
