Board of Review expectations

I agree with Mike Bowman's words this morning on focusing on every board of
review. Admittedly, this is an area in which I have been lax with my
scouts. Our last set of Boards of Review, the board told me that they
would do no more beyond Tenderfoot if the boys weren't in at least a scout
shirt and had a scout handbook. Period, no questions.
Now, those of you who have been following my posts know that many of the
boys in my troop will be getting uniforms from donations--their families
can't afford them. The closest place to get Handbooks is at the
neighboring council's scout shop--a half-hour away. Normally, once per
month, I make a run to the shop, get about 6 books and the merit badge
requirements books, and have the boys repay me.
While I disagreed with the Board's blanket statement, the idea behind, I
believe now, was sound. While knowledge, leadership, and everything else
we hopefully teach and instill in our boys is important, so is *looking*
like a scout. We have two shirts that are generic shirts for the troop.
If a boy doesn't have one, and has a BoR, he wears one of those, so he can
be in uniform, at least for the Board. Hopefully, we won't have to do that
much longer.
