Been in, and know about a couple of different practices.
The one I like the best, thus far, is the Every Meeting BoR.
Spontaneous as Heck which it seems is the same as the one =
used by our own Minnesota Mr. Peter T.
Spontaneous means it gets convened immediately after the SM-Confr
i.e. the same meeting or the very next. The Adults know who has =
passed the SM-Conference and they are "Pro-Active" to get the boy
to and thru the next stage. It's tough enough for boys =
at 11 or 12 or 13 to sit in front of 3 adults with those adult =
faces we seem to have and that Inquisition Attitude they are =
facing whether we think otherwise. Had a capable boy the other =
day that was almost crying at every question due to fear for =
fears sake, or maybe his parents built-in goal/failure/success
structure. So I don't appreciate forcing the kids to ask once =
or ask again and again for BoR's that are their right and our =
ADULT DUTY. This isn't business YET for them for Crying out Loud
so "cut them some slack".
Another Troop did one, once a month and the leader (Adv Guy)
knew who was up for a BoR and made sure they had it. Didn't like
this style as much yet my point is that the Advancement adult took
the "Bull by the Horns" not some 11 yr old who was scared stiff or
had to beg and beg a bunch of adults for his rights.
Funny thing was that the Weekly Meeting spontaneous practice =
of Adult "Pro-Activity" created a Scout "Pro-Activity". I often =
heard a scout say "Hey I want a SM Conference, Hey I want my BoR".
The practice did several nice things including this Boy-Drive
Kathy for that Advancement Guy that is TOO BUSY to come to scouts.
DO a BoR and then another BoR without him and tell him the results
so he can record it and turn in the proper forms. Call first and =
tell him this will happen and let him make the choice about the =
value of his attendance "For the Boys". He is probably a nice guy
yet he is plugging the system by certain adult attitudes that think
an 11 yr old is a man now.
One Additional "I Got a Dream" Note

On top of this great practice I have seen done, a practice
I would like to do someday is the BoR for any old reason. =
You know one of the "By The Book BoR's" to rekindle the fire
of youth with that adult stuff we are supposed to possess
being independent as we seem to think from our youthful days.
The purpose would be to reach a boy who isn't doing so well in =
scouting and find out WHY, What the Troop can do, and create a =
Positive Force that moves him and scouting in the Troop forward.
Now, this one probably should be convened only Once a Month. This
would help us find boys who are having problems themselves, with =
us, or in their lives e.g. Mr. Mike B's Len from years ago and
many others I am aware of.

P.S. If you can have Beaver Dam, Wisconsin's BoR process ***
that is on a Railroad dining car serving crumpets, tea,
and Snapple I guess I would agree on waiting a week or =
OK maybe two at the very longest.
