(I missed that start of the topic ... hope this is not duplicate info...)
Some of the troops that I have been associated with over the last 25+
years were a collection of less than ideally behaved boys.
One of the goals of Scouting is to teach them how to fit into
society. I have found that the rule "condemn in private, praise
in public" goes along ways with overly energetic boys. I personally
don't think that criticizing a child in front of their peers
is constructive.
I use what I call the "3 x 3", rule.
The first two times a child needs discipline, it is done 1 on 1,
without the parents being notified, on the third occurrence,
it goes to the parents. I call that first set strike 1.
I do not mention to the parents the first two incidents.
If it ever makes it to strike 3 (9 times to me - 3 time to
the parents), the child, parents and I sit down and have
a talk. Often the child is incredibility silent, hoping that
you do not tell their parents about the other 6 incidents.
I don't recall it ever making it to the 10th incident. The "3x3"
rule both builds trust and teaches accountability.
