But if the above sounds amusingly crude, don't relax just yet. There are
scams that might fool even the savviest Web surfer. In July, the New York
Times reported the case of a scam e-mail chain letter, circulating through
AOL and beyond, which purported to originate with a 7-year-old cancer
victim. The letter asked for no money. Recipients were requested simply to
perpetuate the chain and forward a copy to the American Cancer Society at a
given (phony) address; "corporate sponsors" would supposedly contribute
pennies for every message forwarded. It turned out the girl did not exist.
The purpose of the scam was to strip all the addresses from the forwarded
messages to sell as mailing lists.
