Embarrased about Embarrassed of Uniform

Barry C Runnels (Barry_C_Runnels@MMACMAIL.JCCBI.GOV)

OK, I knew I blew it when Joseph said "I disagree with the comment that
someone made that if the PLC doesn't want uniforms,it's ok)".

I didn't say that, but somehow this is what several people read. I am
terrible with words. I brought the Eight Methods of Scouting into the
discussion because it is where the BSA guides us to use uniforms in our
program. This is our leverage, our ace card, and our power to even approach
the subject.

I didn't say anything about what constitutes a full uniform. I DIDN'T SAY
"IT IS OK TO NOT WEAR A UNIFORM". I was trying to say (and did a miserable
job of it) is we have to get the Scouts to understand why the uniform is
one of the Eight Methods, because when they understand and beleive it,
uniforms will not be an issue in your Troop.

I don't believe we can pick and choose from the Eight Methods. I don't
think the uniform is optional. HOWEVER, I also don't think we ask Scouts do
anything just because that is what a Troop is suppose to do. I don't think
uniforms is a good place to test the Bravery part of the law. I think it is
the place to test the Trustworthy and Loyal part. Trust in why uniforms are
important and loyal to wearing them at Scout functions.

We have to sit down with the Scouts and explain the importance of the
uniform until they understand and believe it is an important part of their
program.

Nobody likes to be told to do something without understanding the why. We
want to know what is in it for us? What are the benefits? Scouts are at an
age where looks are very important. Given the the facts or a good
explination, these guys will surpass our expectations. During a Troop
meeting sometime, look at the Scouts and ask yourself, if the adults didn't
show up, would these guys still behave like Scouts?

That's why I say we need more of your stories, philosophies, guidance, and
anything else we can take to a young teenager that will help him say "yes,
now I understand why uniforms are an important." With very wise people like
Jim Sleezer, Mike Walton, Joseph Alessi and many other experienced, gifted
Scouters who always give great advice for difficult subjects, we can find
those words and ideas.

Sorry for the confusion. Now I understand why my wife makes me repeat
everything to myself. Now I understand why my wife makes me repeat
everything to myself.
