"Educating our community is the key." That phrase is popular with our
troop in Spain. Some years we get money from the base to help with summer
camp costs (last year's cost per Scout was $600 since the only two camp's
in the council are in Germany and England). Last year we didn't get a cent
from the base, and we weren't the only youth group to get bypassed. The
youth baseball team was to play a tournament in Poland & found out two
weeks before leaving the money they were counting on was not going to be
given to them.
Look for other options. We have had some luck (better at times than
others) in bagging at the Exchange or Vidomart. The troop bagged two days
over Columbus weekend and had a bakesale on Sunday and pulled in $1000
plus. Granted the ships were in port & we all wore uniforms to clearly
identify us as Scouts/Scouters.
I made a point of letting people know that the money was going toward
summer camp and the cost our Scouts have to attend. Many (even those
assigned to the base) were shocked at the cost. Wasn't trying to play on
their sympathy, just inform.
COs can prohibit on-base fundraisers. Our last base had a two per group
limit during any year.
