I agree that it doesn't specify unassisted. My son struggled for the
entire 2nd week he attended summer camp to stay close enough to the surface
to pass the swim test. In cubs he passed it by swimming the length of the
pool underwater.
I don't know if it is the amount of body fat or what but I have three
"rocks" that can do the strokes on the bottom of the pool! Our SM is
another skinny "rock" that says he never could stay up to even float.

Since we work so hard to encourage the boys, I strongly urge that everyone
consider that there are some boys who simply will not be swimmers and help
them get passed this requirement with the least embarrasment as possible.
