SM training for flatwater canoe expeditions:

Been to Boundary Waters and wish you could do that here at home? Well,
we've found lakes and rivers almost that quiet and peaceful here in the
SE USA. All you need are the canoes and the know-how to launch your
Troop on a weekend or a week-long canoe trek close to home. This has
been done by scoutmasters in SE Tenn. since 1930. We've done it many
times, and we can teach you all about it, complete with handouts and
textbooks. Our Council has the right canoes for it. Our instructors have
been flatwater and whitewater canoeing from Fla. to the Northern Tier
for many years.

Dates: Oct. 18-19, 1997. Beautiful Fall colors in the mountains.
Place: Ocoee (Olympic River) Lake, Tennessee.
Times: Sat. 9AM to Sun. 4PM.
Cost: only $15/person.

Ocoee Lake (downstream from the Olympic Whitewater course)is a beautiful
mountain lake mostly bordered by undeveloped public lands. We'll cover
all aspects, from packing, portaging, food, cooking, and demonstrate
recovery from swamping in the middle of the lake. We'll paddle several
miles and camp at Camp Cherokee, one of our old Council summer
campgrounds. We'll still have our regular SM Whitewater Training here
each May, but we had some requests to use the canoes on our serene
flatwater, and it should be beautiful indeed.

If you are interested in coming to this training, please email back to
me, jwright@chattanooga.net right away. Space is limited. Our Cherokee
Area Council phone number is 423-892-8323. Staff advisor's name is Scott
Brown.

Looking forward to seeing some of you on the water.
YIS. Jack Wright.
