The National Forest Service has this game as a quiz in the Leave No
Trace packet. The packet is a very good reference for backpacking.

Subject: looking for a game & a tip
At a training course this weekend we were talking about a game someone
had
seen to help Scouts learn what items to take on a backpacking trip. A
lot
of items are spread out--some things you should take, some things you
should
not take, and some "maybes". Each patrol (or each Scout if you're
working
with one patrol) in turn chooses items. Items have a positive or
negative
point value (the player doesn't know the point value until the item
has been
picked). The closer you are to 0 points the better your selection of
equipment.
Has anyone played something like this? I was going to work something
up but
I thought I'd see if I can save myself some work.
Here's a tip for camping. Instead of using a plastic groundsheet
under your
tent use some landscape cloth. It's tough & strong, cheap, and packs
lighter than a plastic sheet. Any water that gets under the tent just
soaks
through the cloth.
