Re: Bed wetting

Stop the problem of bed wetting before coming to camp. In a parents
meeting without the boys present, mention the subject and encourage
the parents to seek medical advise should they be experiencing the
problem at home. Night time bed wetting, as opposed to incontinence,
is controlled by an enzyme that slows down the production of urine
while we are asleep. Some people produce too little of the enzyme for
a variety of physical reasons including emotional stress.

To assist someone who is experiencing this problem, a doctor may
prescribe a synthetic enzyme called DDAVP. Taken in the form of a
nasal spray just before bedtime each night will generally eliminate
the problem. I've known 5 scout families who used this method of
control and swear by DDAVP. It works like magic.

As the child matures, the problem usually resolves itself, but there
is no reason for a youngster to miss out on great times.

>As an after thought, what about bed-wetters? We handle that by "airing

We do the same. in fact, it is recommeded here on training that when
dealing with Cubs and camps, we do bed inspections and check all the
sleeping bags. This is done, by a adult when the cubs are out on a activity.

It all depends on why the child is bed wetting. It may be a true medical
problem, or sometimes it can be becuase it is a emotional thing, such as
new surroundings.

As it can be a emotional or phyiscal thing, it is that little harder to put
on forms. A girl I was in Guides with developed this problem at the age of
14, when there were problems at home.

The most effective way is to simply check everyone's bed, at some stage,
shortly after the youth have gotten up and stuff. This way, you can catch
it early before the oder sets in and the child will have a dry bed later.
