This is what Troop 68 does as well.It is what our Council has been
suggesting at SMF training for the last several years. I spent 2 years as
the Advancement Chair before this past year as the CC, and find that it
works well.
The only exception is at Summer Camp. We do BORs during the week (after the
SM Conference) and at the closing Troop COH, the scouts receive an evelope
with the merit badges (AND BLUE CARDS!), any rank advacement patches and
cards, and other summer camp awards (segments for the camp patch, NRA
awards, BSA Lifeguard, etc.)
Since I am posting, let me add my $0.25 (inflation) about our week at
summer camp.
Troop 68 arrived at Yawgoog Scout Reservation (Rockville RI) on Sunday
afternoon August 3. About 1.5 hours after we were allowed to get into the
camp site (at SANDY BEACH, yeah!) the heavens openned and a thunderstorm
passed through. This set the tone for the week. The Metcalf Dining Hall
was struck by lightning (no one hurt, only damage to PA system) and a tent
was hit (again, no injuries).
As I told my staff, it rained on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
(including while we were cooking for the bake-off) Friday and Saturday. A
total of about 7.5 inches for the week accrding to the Nature Center staff.
There were enough bright spots so all who were working on Swimming,
Lifesaving and the boating merit badges got in their time.
The 37 Scouts earned 86 merit badges (plus a dozen more finished up with a
troop member who counsels Astronomy and Environmental Science, among
others). We had 11 rank advancements, 14 NRA awards, 8 Archery awards, 8
instructor certificates, 3 mile swim, 1 World Conservation Award. We also
earned a total of 302 Yawgoog Camp Patch Segments. I was told by the
Trading Post staff that our troop purchased more awards than any other
troop so far this summer. We had 7 adults for the whole week and had 5 more
by Saturday evening.
In spite of the rain it was a successful week!
