Bob (et al),
Sorry to "weigh in" late on this thread....
We don't do much backpacking down here (ther's really nowhere to walk
to) but I just tonight hit on a really interesting web site for all on
the list to visit.
A guy named Don Buchan of Scouts Canada has put up a web page that has
info on just what you're asking about...reducing pack weight. (His site
also has tips on other things-Scouting.)
Be advised he is apparently REALLY into conservation in a big way since
he has not a single image on his web site. All that 'text-only' stuff
really saves bandwidth and also is GREAT for blind Scouts with only OCR
software (something many of us, including myself, often
forget....seriously.)
While there is little doubt he has a good informational page, he appears
also to have an ego... the site is titled "The SuperScout(er) Page." (I
just LOVE audacity.) :-)
The URL is: http://www.cam.org/~malak/super.html

Good luck on your walkabout.

YiS,

Doug Roach
